As it’s World Whisky Day this Saturday 18 May we thought we’d share our recent visit to Toronto’s fabulous Distillery District with you. Toronto's Whisky HeritageWe were surprised to learn that Toronto was once home to the largest distillery in the world, Gooderham and Worts which started as a mill in 1832 before growing into a distillery in 1837. It remained a distillery until 1990 when the last whisky was finally distilled ending 158 years of industry. 40 buildings across 13 AcresToronto’s distillery district as it’s now known lies just to the east of the downtown area, not far from Union station and close to Lake Ontario. In 2003 it was turned into a pedestrianised boutique shopping area and has been beautifully and sympathetically preserved as a great example of Victorian industrial heritage and it was great to stroll around what must have been a pretty awesome place in its day. All the remaining buildings are original and there are quite a few reminders of the past like this fabulous planer which Ali spotted straight away. Sake and WhiskyThere are lots of lovely independent shops to browse as well as 2 distilleries, a theatre, art galleries, restaurants and a creative hub with lots of creative businesses and studios. First up, we couldn’t resist trying some sake at Izumi, This little brewery, Ontario’s first Sake distillery was tiny with a mini bar area where we could try a sake flight tray – made from Ontario spring water, each one was absolutely delicious and served in beautiful little sake cups. Botanical barAfter a wander round the complex we headed to the Spirit of York Distillery, a fabulous space, well laid out with the most amazing bar area with surrounded by botanicals. There was even a band playing the day we were there. What more do you want! They produce Canadian Rye whisky as well as vodka and gin and acquavit. Capture the spirit of World Whisky Day If you love whisky history, you’ll love this place. We can’t wait to come back and we highly recommend a visit if you’re in Toronto. Don't forget to celebrate World Whisky Day this Saturday 18 May, you'll be in good company! You can find the perfect whisky gift in our online shop

The end of winter here in Scotland is fast approaching, flowers are starting to bloom, days are getting longer and it’s even getting warmer. Like many of our friends, we’re not great fans of the long Scottish winter and love to celebrate the arrival of spring. So what better way than by a wee treat? There are lots of good reasons to treat yourself, maybe you’ve managed to keep that New Year’s resolution going, you might have a bit of birthday money to splash or perhaps it’s just time to be nice to yourself and indulge a little, after all life is for living! Whatever the reason, we’ll sure you’ll find the perfect something to spark joy. In this post, I’ve pulled together some of our best gifts just for you, because you deserve it. Whisky barrel tasting tray with 1 Glencairn glassThese cute little 1 glass tasting trays are ideal for relaxing with a wee dram after a hard day slaving away at work. If you have a long commute by public transport there’s nothing better than chilling out with a little of what makes you happy. Our trays make whatever you’re drinking that bit extra special. Whisky Barrel Tabletop Clock with Japanese Kimono SilkIn these uncertain Brexit times it’s good to remember there’s a whole world out there. Our Kimono tabletop clock celebrates Scotland’s connection to Japan through Rita Cowan, who together with her Japanese husband took whisky to Japan, eventually setting up the Nikka whisky distillery. Made from recycled Scotch whisky barrels and Japanese Kimono I think you’ll agree the effect is stunning. Whisky Barrel CoastersWe all need a pick me up in this season, whether that’s an Americano, green tea or indulging in a hot chocolate, our wee coasters are the perfect place to put your cup. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment too as they are all recycled from whisky barrel lids often around 50 years old. Whisky Barrel Standing LampIf you’ve been incredibly good this year so far then why not completely spoil yourself with our standing lamp. Made from whisky barrel staves from a sherry cask. These are very popular with good reason, they are a great conversation piece in any home. Once again, all recycled so eco-friendly too and one of a kind as every stave is different. You can be sure, no one has one just like you.
